Pure Sky feat. Winter (@daydreamingwinter) — The newly New York-based, Brazilian-American artist spinning lovelorn emotional landscapes with each song she writes. Somewhere between shoegaze and dream pop, Winter has built a home. Read on for a quick Q&A and click here to listen to her playlist.
What should people do while listening to this playlist?
They should put on some headphones, turn on “do not disturb” and go for a walk.
What do you daydream about?
Daydreaming is like a portal for me. It’s kind of like when you’re a kid and you just let your imagination go anywhere it desires. Sometimes I’ll just allow ideas and visuals to flow through me. Other times I’ll daydream about my dreams or a crush if I have one.
We just talked with RIP Swirl a couple weeks ago. You guys put out a really great tune, “Perfectly Blue,” in October. How did that collaboration come about?
My friends in LA showed me his first record and I became a big fan. I think I messaged him on Instagram and we talked about making music together so he sent me that track as an instrumental and I laid down the melodies and lyrics!
Your Brazilian roots are pretty apparent in your earlier music. After living and working in the U.S. for over a decade now, how does Brazil still manifest itself in your work?
It’s always inspiring me one way or another in my melodies, in my sensibility, in my poetry and in my singing style.
Who is your closest confidant?
My mom <3
What is your most cherished archive?
Animal Collective — “Sung Tongs”
Probably the first record I ever bought for myself and what I listened to the first time I got stoned.
Your ideal environment for writing a song:
Either really late at night like 4am or early in the morning like 6am or 7am. There’s something magical in the air and you can be truly at peace with your thoughts when everyone is asleep.
As your music continues to transform and evolve into the future, what’s your guiding light, your north star?
With Winter my north star is to capture the dreamy, the bittersweet — that beautiful and sad ephemeral feeling of living.
Shoegaze has this eternal grip on subculture, but it feels like we’re pretty deep into an especially resurgent moment for the sound right now. How do you explain that resonance in today’s culture?
To me, it’s the ethereal, the sensual, the androgynous, the cryptic, that trance-like experience that I resonate with the most. It’s just so beautiful to me and makes me feel. Maybe it helps people connect with a pure form of ecstasy?
