Pure Sky feat. Comet (@cometintheflesh) — A decidedly good thing happening to music right now. And a fitting torch-bearer moving the American Grunge Project™ forward. With each song, music video, and live show, the New York rock artist sets out a more daunting challenge for herself than the last. Then she delivers. There’s no hiding in Comet’s music, no room for anything but bare emotion and ripping distorted guitars. Her new single “Opium,” which she debuted at an incredible release show last week, is just the latest example. Read on for our Q&A and click here to listen to a playlist curated by Comet.
What should people do while listening to this playlist?
Reflect.
What’s your elevator pitch for bringing back grunge?
It feels more collective consciousness right now. I’m not pitching anything. I guess it’s more pushing forward grunge than bringing it back.
You’ve described songwriting as a kind of prophecy. Do you believe in magic? What role does it play in your art?
I believe that every song is a spell and they set an intention when you listen to them. I write with the same intention.
I went to your release show for the new single “Opium” last week. Your stage presence is transfixing. Can you walk us through your performance philosophy?
When I’m on stage I try to bring everyone into the world my music lives in. I tap back into how I felt when I wrote the song. For the next 30 minutes you will “ache like I ache.”

What’s something you’ve learned about yourself in the process of writing and recording your upcoming EP “Quitter”?
You’re only as good as your band.
How do you think growing up on Tumblr shaped your taste?
It made me appreciate the breadth of different styles. I think the DIY frankenstein-ing of different aesthetics and time periods is what makes the current era so original even if a lot of our art is based heavily on the past.
So you used to live in Los Angeles, now you’re here in New York. What’s the biggest difference between being an artist in LA vs NYC right now?
Artists and venues. LA is really fractured and dismal right now as far as both go. It’s a beautiful place. I hope that changes. Also nobody gives a fuck about anything there lol.
What’s one thing you’d like to achieve complete mastery of?
I don’t really believe in complete mastery. I wanna get better at guitar and doing my own hair.
Something, anything, you believe in more than the next guy:
Moving on.
What (or who) is driving culture in 2025?
Greed, Boredom and Fear.
Love your music videos. Do you have a favorite music video of all time?
Tourniquet by Marilyn Manson.
