Andrea (@bathmat3000) —Andrea is, in many ways, the beating heart of the curator generation. Like most of us, she found her legs on Tumblr at 13, and later turned her gift of taste into one of the most resonant IG archive accounts today. Consistently rich in cultural context and personal meaning, following her page is like knowing a person.
We’re excited to have Andrea on Silk, and even more excited to hear about what she’s been curating!
Why do you curate?
Curation makes me a better daydreamer. Browsing through images reminds me that life extends beyond what’s immediately around me.
Again and Again (2010), Thieves Like Us
At 13, this album was my introduction to the world of synths and lo-fi music. I still never get tired of playing it all the way through. Their music videos for this album and others inspired my love for the subdued color schemes and overall style of so many 70s European films.
Heaven Knows What (2014), dir. Josh and Benny Safdie
I would watch this movie over and over again my freshman year of college. It stars Arielle Holmes who plays Harley, a character based on Holmes’s own memoir, Mad Love in New York City, which details her struggles with addiction and homelessness.
It’s one of those rare movies that makes you feel like you’re actually being exposed to something real. The scene where Tangerine Dream’s Phaedra leads you through Harley’s chaotic interactions in the psychiatric ward is etched in my mind forever.
Rebelde (2004-2006), created by Pedro Damián
As a kid, this show was my favorite before I moved to the states. It was incredibly popular in Puerto Rico, so I had all of the CD’s and never missed an episode. I feel like the characters’ style perfectly captures the bold and playful fashion of the 2000s.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows (Capilla de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves)
These photos of a Catholic chapel in Antarctica are some of the most memorable images I’ve encountered. They’re taken inside a permanent glacier where 12 researchers would go to worship. I love the way the modest arrangement of iconography is set against the natural beauty of the glacier. Its contrast to the ornateness of the Catholic church and the Catholic art that I grew up with in school makes me appreciate how beautiful and simple it is.
John Galliano AW 2007/2008
This collection is so visually engaging. My favorite looks are those with the dramatically glossy skin, hair, and tears paired with the stunning sheer dresses. The models look like they were just birthed backstage.
My First Communion
This day and all the preparation involved led me to my fondness for the color white and adoration for rosaries and the Virgin Mary. My mom sewed all of the pearls onto my dress by hand, which gave me an early appreciation for the work involved in creating meaningful garments.
2000s Reggaeton
Reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee, Ivy Queen, Tito El Bambino and many others continue to influence what I curate. The hats, the shades, the bling, and the long nails are all still so iconic to me. Seeing such strong examples of personal style emerge from where I grew up taught me to value self-expression at a young age.
